The Sumida River Lantern Floating Festival began as a memorial service for those who died in the Sumida River during the Asakusa Reconstruction Festival in 1946, in order to mourn the souls of those who died in the river during the Great Kanto Earthquake, the Great Tokyo Air Raids, and other events.
After that, the event became more and more popular each year, and at its peak, as many as 3,000 Uro floated on the Sumida River, beautifully lit by the moonlight, and drifting across the river's surface along with the sounds of prayers for peace.
In the spring of 1966, seawalls were constructed on both banks to prevent high tides, and the lantern floating event was sadly discontinued after 1965.
Now, with the Sumida River Waterfront Terrace now in place, and with the cooperation of the relevant authorities, the Asakusa Tourism Federation is able to revive the lantern floating event for the first time in 40 years, in order to encourage tourists to make wider use of the Sumida River waterfront space as a place for relaxation and entertainment as a new tourist spot in Asakusa in 2005.


In stark contrast to the fireworks festival also held on the Sumida River, the beauty of the lanterns floating on the still river made a deep impression on the spectators on the riverbank.
