We will provide English commentary for the event “Honsha Mikoshi Miyairi”, that is part of the most renowned festival, “Sanja Matsuri”. This live stream is secondary use of the footage broadcasted domestically by Japanese cable television company “J:COM”. The live stream will include English commentary.
The Sanja Matsuri is held at Asakusa Shrine in Taito-ku, Tokyo, over three days on the third Friday to Sunday of May. This event is one of the most famous festival in Japan that attracts approximately 1.8 million people.
The town of Asakusa becomes most enthusiastic and lively during these three days, and will have various festivals. In this lives stream, we will bring you the excitement of the bearers of the Miokoshi reaching their peak during the “Honsha Mikoshi Miyairi” from the grounds of the shrine.
The main mikoshi refers to these three: “Ichinomiya”, “Ninomiya”, and “Sannomiya”. Residents of Asakusa are the bearers and carry the mikoshi through the town of Asakusa from early morning, returning to Asakusa Shrine, a process known as “Miyairi.” The scene of the Mikoshi carried into the brightly lit grounds of Asakusa Shrine, accompanied by the festival music, is a powerful moment that even Japanese people familiar with festivals find incredible.
We will live stream from the grounds of Asakusa Shrine as three main Mikoshi make their way into the shrine. During the live stream, please share your thoughts and impression on Japanese traditions, Mikoshi, and festivals in the chat section.
